Why Hybrid

Conventional oils do not cleanly burn, while synthetics do not completely burn.

Why not synthetics

Synthetic oils are laboratory engineered with excellent lubricity and extreme temperature properties, and are considered “chemically” superior to conventional petroleum-based oils. The main benefit occurs at high RPMs. When the load and heat reach extreme levels, synthetics provide the needed protection. But these levels are rarely seen in snowmobiling today except in drag racing or fully-modded engines.

Furthermore, a synthetic’s high temperature stability works against a 2-stroke engine’s “total loss” lubrication system.  Simply put, 2-stroke engines are designed to burn oil, while synthetic oils do not readily burn.

Our years of research show that regular use of synthetic lubricants leaves a glaze of unburned synthetic oil on a 2-stroke engine’s cylinders.  This glazing effect can be spotted by removing a cylinder and observing discoloration below the ring lands.  It normally begins around 1500 miles and, with continued use, prevents the piston rings from sealing properly.  This situation, known as “blow-by”, allows the fuel/air/oil mixture into the crankcase, reducing the engine’s compression, and hampering the engine’s power and efficiency.

Why not the others

The most obvious benefit of conventional, petroleum-based oils is the cost.  Being manufactured from crude, they are very affordable.  Because of their organic nature and their petroleum basis, these mineral oils are easily combusted by a 2-stroke engine.  Their thickness also makes them better at coating and protecting the engine in the offseason and during other extended periods of non-use.

However, while synthetics are artificially manufactured to chemical purity, mineral oils contain impurities that “burn dirty”, create extra friction, destabilize the oil at higher temperatures, and leave carbon deposits in the exhaust and other engine components.

Best of both worlds

Our uncompromising obsession at Legend is to produce the best motorsports lubricants in the world. An ideal 2-stroke oil must burn thoroughly like a petroleum-based oil, but with the cleanliness of a synthetic. This “holy grail” combines the best features of a mineral oil with the purity of a synthetic, while refining out the undesirable properties.

Legend oils start with the absolute highest quality, ashless, mineral base stock. This is then ultra-refined to a “turbine-oil” like level of purity, removing the contaminants commonly found in other petroleum-based oils (such as tar, asphalt, and waste materials). Finally, this ultra-pure base is combined with the most chemically advanced additives in the world, creating what we proudly call a hybrid “super” lubricant.

Clean Burn

The result of starting with the best ashless, mineral base stocks, combined with extreme refinement of remaining impurities. Witnessed by the lack of exhaust, odor, and buildup.

Complete Burn

An easily combustible, petroleum-based oil avoids the glazing and blow-by common to synthetics – which means less maintenance and a superior piston ring seal that synthetics can’t touch.

Extra Power

Since a 2-stroke oil is mixed with fuel, it should burn like fuel.   Our mineral oil not only prevents blow-by, but also adds power – enough power for 35 championships and 29 world records.

Advanced Additives

Incorporates the most chemically advanced additives in the world to meet and exceed the highest JASO industry ratings while providing superior scuff protection and film strength.

Corrosion Protection

Straight synthetics are known to “flash off” when the engine is inactive.  The thicker coating of a mineral oil provides  excellent off-season rust protection.

Warranty Compliance

By exceeding the toughest industry standards, Legend oils meet the warranty requirements of snowmobile manufacturers.
